What is plastic surgery

PLASTIC SURGERY is a surgical speciality that aims at RESTORING THE ANATOMY AND THE FUNCTION, of those parts of our organism that have been altered by congenital or acquired deformities, as well as CORRECTING AESTHETIC SHORTCOMINGS.

Generally plastic surgery is divided in two areas. Reconstructive Surgery, the type of surgery that aims at restoring the anatomy and the lost functions of the organs, and Aesthetic or Cosmetic Surgery that treats defects of certain parts of our body that come with aging.

IN PRACTICE THIS DIVISION DOES NOT REALLY EXIST. For example, when we operate on a child with a cleft lip where we apply surgical skills to restore the anatomy, we also improve the aesthetics of the top lip.
PLASTIC SURGERY HAS SEVERAL AREAS as it manipulates several areas of our body as well as applying multiple procedures, as well as using different surgical techniques. It treats surgically certain skin diseases, as well as the underlying tissues (fat tissue, muscles and bones), in locations as diverse as the face, hand, neck, abdominal wall, limbs, genitals and the breasts.
It applies many procedures such as techniques of microsurgery, microsurgery of nerves, transplants of muscles and tendons, and the surgery of joints. The intervention in different areas of the body often requires the integration of a  multidisciplinary team.
PLASTIC SURGERY, ABOVE ALL AIMS AT PRESERVING LIFE, REHABILITATING AND RECUPERATING THE FUNCTION AND THEN IMPROVING THE AESTHETICS. That is why plastic surgeons examine and observe in order to realize a correct diagnosis before treating; and then plan a surgical strategy, choosing the best methods, always having alternative plans ready and waiting.
Then plastic surgeons operate with good skill, applying atraumatic techniques, using a specialized set of instruments adapted for every procedure and with appropriate material (threads of suture, prosthesis, etc.). Plastic surgeons admit that the post operation recovery is just as important as the surgical planning.
Professor Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, has expressed that plastic surgeons just like sculptors, painters and poets LOOK FOR BEAUTY AS A SOURCE OF LIBERTY WITHOUT LIMITS, BUT ACTUALLY, THE SURGERY THAT MOST RESEMBLES ART HAS ITS LIMITS. These limits are imposed by biological and natural laws such as scaring or the quantity of blood irrigation that the tissues require.
Sir Harold Gillies, the biggest plastic surgeon from England from the middle  the 20th century, who many people consider to be the founder of modern Plastic Surgery, he said that ” Plastic Surgery is a constant battle between blood supply and beauty ”.
PLASTIC SURGERY IS A BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION OF ART, SCIENCE AND SKILL, THROUGH WHICH THE FUNCTION AND THE AESTHETICS ARE IMPROVED FOR THE SAKE OF THE HEALTH OF THE PATIENT.

That is why we decided to design this web site, “PLASTICATOTAL”, to make available information that will be able to help you in your decision.
